Rabies is a virus spread via the saliva of an infected mammal, most commonly a dog. A bite, scratch or lick can be enough to transmit the virus if it is allowed to enter the human blood stream. Rabies is 99% fatal in unvaccinated individuals who do not seek treatment in time.
Vaccination is essential for travel to high risk areas and must be considered as a priority. You should aim to get your first dose ideally five weeks before travelling to ensure you will be able to complete the course in time. The course consists of three vaccines. The second dose is given seven days after the first dose. The third dose should be given three weeks after the second dose.
