Antecedents Triggers & Mediators

Understanding Antecedents, Triggers and Mediators that underlie illness or dysfunction in each patient permits therapy to be targeted and personalized to the needs of the individual.

Antecedents: are factors genetic or acquired that predispose to an illness or pattern. Understanding the antecedents of an illness helps the physician understand the unique characteristics of each patient as they relate to his or her current health.

We utilize Genomic Testing where we evaluate ‘single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP’s) in genes e.g. looking at the MTHFR genotypes in methylation – biochemical pathway so critical to life.

Triggers: are factors that provoke the symptoms and signs of illness e.g. physical or psychic trauma, microbes, drugs, allergens, foods such as gluten and dairy, environmental toxins and stressful life events.

Identification and elimination of triggers (trauma, infections, toxins, and food) is very important in functional Medicine and Homoeopathic treatment.

Mediators and formation of illness - are factors biochemical or psychological that contribute to pathological changes and dysfunctional responses e.g. cytokines, electromagnetic fields, fear of pain, free radicals, hormones e.g. insulin, cortisol, histamine.
